Social Media

Almost 90% of Americans use social media, so it can be an important communication tool. It’s important to understand its strengths and shortcomings though, which are discussed in more depth in the How-to Guide for Marketing Transit.

Social media is best for short, easy-to-understand messages. Pictures and videos increase people’s interest in your posts and encourage social media platforms to show your posts more often. If you choose to use social media, you need to build a following by promoting your social media pages on buses, on your website, and in your printed guides.

Social media design tips:

  • Keep text content short; link to your website if you have a lot to say.
  • Use pictures and videos as much as possible.
  • Keep it simple.
  • Infographics, such as simple maps, can boost engagement.
  • Stay consistent with your brand. You want users to recognize that it’s a post from your agency.
  • Track how many followers are engaging or commenting on posts to see if certain types of posts are working better than others.

Social Media Advertising

Social media ads can be precisely targeted to local and specific audience demographics. Digital ad buys are more flexible than traditional media because you can set the budget yourself, rather than having to buy ads based on the published rate. Each social media platform has systems that the person listed as your account’s administrator or manager can use to set up ads.

Each social media platform has different requirements for sizes of ads, but the square format of the social media posts above will work for ads on many platforms.
